Story Details: The Great Glad Tidings

The glad tidings of Ishaq came when Angels visited Ibrahim and gave him the good news of a knowing boy, while his wife Sarah was an old, barren woman. Sarah laughed in astonishment at the news: ﴾قَالَتۡ يَٰوَيۡلَتَىٰٓ ءَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا۠ عَجُوزٞ وَهَٰذَا بَعۡلِي شَيۡخًاۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيۡءٌ عَجِيبٌٞ﴿ (She said, "Alas for me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is a strange thing!"). But the Angels confirmed the good news, and she gave birth to him in Ash-Sham.

Prophethood and Blessing

Ishaq was raised under the care of his father Ibrahim and received prophethood. Although the direct details of his story in the Qur'an are few compared to Isma'il and Ya'qub, the Qur'an focused on his high status as one of the heirs of prophethood, and praised him for his righteousness and blessing: ﴾وَبَٰرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسۡحَٰقََۚ﴿ (And We blessed him and Ishaq).

The Lineage of Prophets

Ishaq's importance comes from being the father of Ya'qub (Israel), and from Ya'qub branched out the Tribes of the Children of Israel, so prophethood for the most part was from Ishaq's progeny until 'Eesa (Jesus) (PBUH).

Key to the Story: Endowment and Blessing

Ishaq (PBUH) represents the Golden Link in the chain of prophets, as he is the father of Ya'qub, and from him prophethood and blessing were inherited in the righteous progeny.

﴾Wawahabna lahu ishaqa wayaAAqooba kullan hadayna wanoohan hadayna min qablu wamin thurriyyatihi dawooda wasulaymana waayyooba wayoosufa wamoosa waharoona wakathalika najzee almuhsineen﴿ (Al-An'am: 84)
