Story Details: Creation and Empowerment in Paradise

The story of Adam began when God willed to create a Vicegerent for Him on Earth. God created him from clay and breathed into him of His Spirit, then taught him all the names, to demonstrate to the angels that this new creation possessed the eligibility for knowledge and understanding that qualified him for the Vicegerency. God commanded all the angels to prostrate to Adam, a prostration of honor. They all prostrated except Iblis, who refused and was arrogant, thus becoming the outcast devil.

God housed Adam and his wife, Hawa (Eve), in Paradise and permitted them everything except eating from one tree. Here came the Trial; Iblis whispered to them, promising them eternity, so they ate from the tree. The result of the disobedience was their descent to Earth.

Repentance and Descent to Earth

When they realized their error, God inspired them with "Words" of repentance, so they prayed with them: ﴾قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمۡنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمۡ تَغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَتَرۡحَمۡنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينََ﴿. God accepted their repentance and sent them down to Earth to begin the mission of Vicegerency and work upon it, reminding them of the enmity of Satan.

Key to the Story: Repentance and Vicegerency

Adam is the first reference for humanity in knowledge and experience. His story teaches us that error is part of human nature, but true success lies in taking the initiative to repent and bearing the responsibility of Vicegerency on Earth.

﴾Fatalaqqa adamu min rabbihi kalimatin fataba AAalayhi innahu huwa attawwabu arraheem﴿ (Al-Baqarah: 37)
