Story Details: The Demand for a Sign and the Challenge of the She-Camel

God sent Saleh to the people of Thamud to command them to worship God. Saleh was known to them for his sound judgment before prophethood, so they were surprised by his call and accused him of magic. They challenged him to bring them a great sign, so God brought forth for them from the rock a magnificent She-Camel, making it a sign for them. It had a specific drinking arrangement: ﴾لَّهَا شِرۡبٞ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ يَوۡمٖ مَّعۡلُومٖٖ﴿ (A known day for her to drink, and a known day for you to drink) and she provided enough milk for them.

The Slaying of the She-Camel and the Downfall of the People

The people of Saleh did not abide by the covenant, and they conspired to slay (slaughter) the She-Camel, forgetting Saleh's warnings: ﴾وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٖ فَيَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٌٖ﴿ (And do not touch her with harm, lest a painful punishment seize you). When the slaying occurred, Saleh informed them that they had three days of enjoyment before the punishment descended. On the fourth day, the Blast (Sayhah) (a lethal sound) seized them along with the Earthquake (Rajfah) (a severe tremor), and they became motionless corpses in their homes. Only Saleh and those who believed with him were saved.

Lessons and Morals Learned:

  • Blessing is Not Enough: Engineering prowess and luxurious living do not protect from divine punishment.
  • The Severity of Corruption: Killing the She-Camel was the height of corruption and disbelief, so they deserved the most severe type of destruction.

The Pivotal Verse:

﴾FaAAaqaroo annaqata waAAataw AAan amri rabbihim waqaloo ya-salihu itina bima taAAiduna in kunta mina almursaleen (77) Faakhathathumu arrajfatu faasbahoo fee darihim jathimeen﴿ (Al-A'raf: 77-78)

Key to the Story: The Miracle and the Challenge

The story of Saleh confirms that miracles come to establish the proof against the disbelievers. Whoever denies after the clarity of the proof, their fate is inevitable destruction.

﴾Waakhatha allatheena thalamoo assayhatu faasbahoo fee diyarihim jathimeen﴿ (Hud: 67)
