'Abasa He Frowned

سُورَةُ عَبَسَ

رقمها ٨٠ عدد آياتها ٤٢

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ١

The Prophet frowned and turned away

Saheeh International

AAabasa watawalla

Transliteration

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ ٢

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Saheeh International

An jaahu alaAAma

Transliteration

وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ٣

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

Saheeh International

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

Transliteration

أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ ٤

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

Saheeh International

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra

Transliteration

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ ٥

As for he who thinks himself without need,

Saheeh International

Amma mani istaghna

Transliteration

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ٦

To him you give attention.

Saheeh International

Faanta lahu tasadda

Transliteration

وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Saheeh International

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

Transliteration

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ ٨

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

Saheeh International

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

Transliteration

وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ ٩

While he fears [Allah],

Saheeh International

Wahuwa yakhsha

Transliteration

فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ١٠

From him you are distracted.

Saheeh International

Faanta AAanhu talahha

Transliteration

كـَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ ١١

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

Saheeh International

Kalla innaha tathkira

Transliteration

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ١٢

So whoever wills may remember it.

Saheeh International

Faman shaa thakarah

Transliteration

فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ ١٣

[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

Saheeh International

Fee suhufin mukarrama

Transliteration

مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ ١٤

Exalted and purified,

Saheeh International

MarfooAAatin mutahhara

Transliteration

بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ ١٥

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

Saheeh International

Biaydee safara

Transliteration

كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ ١٦

Noble and dutiful.

Saheeh International

Kiramin barara

Transliteration

قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ ١٧

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

Saheeh International

Qutila alinsanu ma akfarah

Transliteration

مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ١٨

From what substance did He create him?

Saheeh International

Min ayyi shayin khalaqah

Transliteration

مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ١٩

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

Saheeh International

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah

Transliteration

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ٢٠

Then He eased the way for him;

Saheeh International

Thumma assabeela yassarah

Transliteration

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ ٢١

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

Saheeh International

Thumma amatahu faaqbarah

Transliteration

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ٢٢

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

Saheeh International

Thumma itha shaa ansharah

Transliteration

كـَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ٢٣

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

Saheeh International

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarah

Transliteration

فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ٢٤

Then let mankind look at his food -

Saheeh International

Falyanthuri alinsanu ila taAAamih

Transliteration

أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا ٢٥

How We poured down water in torrents,

Saheeh International

Anna sababna almaa sabba

Transliteration

ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا ٢٦

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

Saheeh International

Thumma shaqaqna alarda shaqqa

Transliteration

فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا ٢٧

And caused to grow within it grain

Saheeh International

Faanbatna feeha habba

Transliteration

وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا ٢٨

And grapes and herbage

Saheeh International

WaAAinaban waqadba

Transliteration

وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا ٢٩

And olive and palm trees

Saheeh International

Wazaytoonan wanakhla

Transliteration

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا ٣٠

And gardens of dense shrubbery

Saheeh International

Wahadaiqa ghulba

Transliteration

وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا ٣١

And fruit and grass -

Saheeh International

Wafakihatan waabba

Transliteration

مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ ٣٢

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

Saheeh International

MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum

Transliteration

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ٣٣

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

Saheeh International

Faitha jaati assakhkha

Transliteration

يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ ٣٤

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

Saheeh International

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheeh

Transliteration

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ٣٥

And his mother and his father

Saheeh International

Waommihi waabeeh

Transliteration

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ٣٦

And his wife and his children,

Saheeh International

Wasahibatihi wabaneeh

Transliteration

لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ ٣٧

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Saheeh International

Likulli imriin minhum yawmaithin shanun yughneeh

Transliteration

وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ ٣٨

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

Saheeh International

Wujoohun yawmaithin musfira

Transliteration

ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ ٣٩

Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

Saheeh International

Dahikatun mustabshira

Transliteration

وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ ٤٠

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

Saheeh International

Wawujoohun yawmaithin AAalayha ghabara

Transliteration

تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ٤١

Blackness will cover them.

Saheeh International

Tarhaquha qatara

Transliteration

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ ٤٢

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

Saheeh International

Olaika humu alkafaratu alfajara

Transliteration
