Kuwait is divided into (6) muhafazat (sing. muhafazah: provinces):
  • Capital (Al-ʿĀṣima): Established in 1962, and is home to the seat of government and the National Assembly.
  • Hawalli: Established in 1962, the smallest governorate in area and the most densely populated.
  • Al Ahmadi: Established in 1962, the most densely populated governorate (for Kuwaitis).
  • Al Jahra: Established in 1979, the largest governorate in area.
  • Al Farwaniya: Established in 1988, the largest governorate in terms of population in general.
  • Mubarak Al-Kabeer: Established in 1999, the most recently established governorate in Kuwait.

The governorates are subdivided into districts.
The major cities are the capital Kuwait City and Jahrah (a thirty-minute drive northwest of Kuwait City). The main residential and business areas are Salmiya and Hawalli. The main industrial area is Shuwaikh within the Al Asimah Governorate. The main palace is the As-Seef Palace in the old part of Kuwait City where the Emir runs the daily matters of the country whilst the government headquarters are in the Bayan Palace and the Emir lives in Dar Salwa.
