The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide satellite-based navigation system. It was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense and is known as NAVSTAR-GPS.
The positioning system consists of 24 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 19,000 kilometers. Each satellite transmits a signal carrying its position and transmission time using highly accurate atomic clocks.
Latest Information:
The system achieved full operational capability on July 17, 1995, and currently includes more than 31 active satellites. There are similar systems like Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou.
