The story of Yunus is a sign in repentance, illustrating the consequence of despairing of the people before God's permission.

Yunus (PBUH) is Dhun-Nun (The Possessor of the Fish/Whale), sent by God to the People of Nineveh (in Iraq). He is famous for his unique story where he was swallowed by the whale, and God saved him through a great supplication.

Yunus (Jonah) (PBUH): The Hastiness, the Whale, and the Salvation from the Darknesses

Summary of the Call, Repentance, and Salvation

The Trial and the Mistake

  • The People: The people of Nineveh (a great nation)
  • The Mistake: Leaving the people before God's permission to him
  • The Punishment: Swallowed by the Whale (An-Nun)
  • The Lesson: He thought that God would not constrain him

The Divine Relief

  • Place of Salvation: In three darknesses (the belly of the whale, the sea, the night)
  • The Supplication of Repentance: ﴾لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينََ﴿ (There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.)
  • The Care: He was cast out onto the open shore while he was sick
  • The Return: All of his people believed (a complete nation)

Story Details: Hastiness and Objection

Yunus called his people to Monotheism for a long time, but they refused. Yunus thought that the punishment was inevitable, so he left Nineveh angry and hastily without his Lord's permission, believing he had fulfilled his duty. Yunus boarded a ship, and as a result of a lot drawn, Yunus was cast into the sea, where the Whale (An-Nun) swallowed him by God's command.

Repentance and Return

In the darkness of the whale's belly, Yunus realized his mistake and supplicated to his Lord with the famous invocation. God responded to him and saved him, and the whale cast him onto the shore. When Yunus returned to his people, he found that they had believed and repented after seeing the signs of punishment. Thus, God removed the punishment from them, and Yunus lived among them.

Lessons and Morals Learned:

  • Seeking Forgiveness: Glorification (Tasbih) and acknowledging sin lead to salvation.
  • Wisdom in the Call: Do not despair or be hasty in judging people.

The Pivotal Verse:

﴾fanada fee aththulumati an la ilaha illa anta subhanaka innee kuntu mina aththalimeen﴿ (Al-Anbiya: 87)

Key to the Story: Glorification (Tasbih) in Hardship

Yunus (PBUH) teaches us that glorification (Tasbih) and Monotheism are the only refuge in the most severe crises, and that God saves the sincere penitents even in the bellies of creatures.

﴾Falawla kanat qaryatun amanat fanafaAAaha eemanuha illa qawma yoonusa﴿ (Yunus: 98)
