The story of Yunus is a sign in repentance, illustrating the consequence of despairing of the people before God's permission.
Yunus (PBUH) is Dhun-Nun (The Possessor of the Fish/Whale), sent by God to the People of Nineveh (in Iraq). He is famous for his unique story where he was swallowed by the whale, and God saved him through a great supplication.

Story Details: Hastiness and Objection
Yunus called his people to Monotheism for a long time, but they refused. Yunus thought that the punishment was inevitable, so he left Nineveh angry and hastily without his Lord's permission, believing he had fulfilled his duty. Yunus boarded a ship, and as a result of a lot drawn, Yunus was cast into the sea, where the Whale (An-Nun) swallowed him by God's command.
Repentance and Return
In the darkness of the whale's belly, Yunus realized his mistake and supplicated to his Lord with the famous invocation. God responded to him and saved him, and the whale cast him onto the shore. When Yunus returned to his people, he found that they had believed and repented after seeing the signs of punishment. Thus, God removed the punishment from them, and Yunus lived among them.
Yunus (PBUH) teaches us that glorification (Tasbih) and Monotheism are the only refuge in the most severe crises, and that God saves the sincere penitents even in the bellies of creatures.
