By the dawn
Walfajr
And [by] ten nights
Walayalin AAashr
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
WashshafAAi walwatr
And [by] the night when it passes,
Wallayli itha yasr
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijr
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad -
Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAad
[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
Irama thati alAAimad
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albilad
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
Wathamooda allatheena jaboo assakhra bilwad
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? -
WafirAAawna thee alawtad
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
Allatheena taghaw fee albilad
And increased therein the corruption.
Faaktharoo feeha alfasad
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathab
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
Inna rabbaka labilmirsad
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
Faamma alinsanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akraman
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanan
No! But you do not honor the orphan
Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateem
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeen
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
Watakuloona atturatha aklan lamma
And you love wealth with immense love.
Watuhibboona almala hubban jamma
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed -
Kalla itha dukkati alardu dakkan dakka
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
Wajaa rabbuka walmalaku saffan saffa
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?
Wajeea yawmaithin bijahannama yawmaithin yatathakkaru alinsanu waanna lahu aththikra
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."
Yaqoolu ya-laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
Fayawmaithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahad
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahad
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
Ya-ayyatuha annafsu almutmainna
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyya
And enter among My [righteous] servants
Fadkhulee fee AAibadee
And enter My Paradise."
Wadkhulee jannatee
