Story Details: Mary's Guardianship and Certainty

Zakariya (PBUH) was a priest in the Holy Temple (Baitul-Maqdis) and the guardian of Mary, daughter of Imran. Zakariya saw miracles in Mary's sanctuary (her sustenance coming at unusual times), so he became certain that God is capable of everything. He then supplicated to Him secretly, asking for a child, acknowledging his weak state: ﴾رَبِّ إِنِّي وَهَنَ ٱلۡعَظۡمُ مِنِّي وَٱشۡتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأۡسُ شَيۡبٗا﴿ (My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white hair).

Answer to the Supplication and the Miracle

God answered his supplication, and the angels gave him the glad tidings of his son Yahya, for whom God had not made an earlier namesake. The miracle was compounded: Zakariya's old age and his wife's barrenness. To confirm the glad tidings, Zakariya asked for a sign, which was that he should not speak to people for three days except by gesture and sign, and that he should increase the remembrance of God.

  • Surah Aal Imran (Family of Imran): Verses 37-41 (The story of Mary's guardianship and his seeing the sustenance)
  • Surah Maryam (Mary): Verses 2-15 (Details of his supplication and the glad tidings of Yahya)

Lessons and Morals Learned:

  • The Power of Supplication: Nothing is impossible before God's power if the servant is sincere in his asking.
  • Fear for the Religion: The motives for requesting a child were to preserve the inheritance of prophethood.
  • The Virtue of Lawful Sustenance: He saw the provision in the sanctuary and became certain of God's power.

The Pivotal Verse:

﴾Hunalika daAAa zakariyya rabbahu qala rabbi hab lee min ladunka thurriyyatan tayyibatan innaka sameeAAu adduAAa﴿ (Aal Imran: 38)

Key to the Story: Supplication in Sincerity

The story of Zakariya is a call to certainty in Divine power, and that sincere supplication is the bridge of the impossible, whereby God grants a child from old age and withholds speech as a sign of gratitude and glorification.
