The Story of Hud (Peace Be Upon Him): The Prophet of 'Ad and the Fierce Wind

Chronological Order: Giants of Aad and the First Prophets

Adam Idris Nuh (Noah)
Hud Saleh Lut (Lot)
Prophet of the mighty people of Aad, the people of the pillars

Hud (PBUH) is the first of the four Arab Prophets, and he was sent to the people of 'Ad, known for their physical strength.

The story of Hud with his people shows how material strength and luxury are of no benefit against God's punishment when combined with arrogance and polytheism.

Hud (PBUH): The Warning of the Wind

Summary of the Call of 'Ad and Their Punishment

Key Information

  • People: The People of 'Ad (The First 'Ad)
  • Location: Al-Ahqaf (Southern Arabian Peninsula)
  • Blessing: Vastness in creation and strength in physique
  • Error: Building towering castles and boasting of their power

Miracle and Punishment

  • The miracle of warning and predicting destruction
  • The punishment was a fierce, destructive wind
  • The wind lasted for seven nights and eight days
  • Salvation through mercy from God

Story Details: Arrogance on Earth

The people of 'Ad were the successors of the people of Nuh. God granted them immense physical strength (vastness in creation) and building capability, so they built towering structures as a symbol of their power (Iram of the pillars). But they worshipped idols and denied Hud, accusing him of foolishness and lying. Hud called them to seek forgiveness and repent to increase their strength (He will add strength to your strength), but they responded with defiance, saying: ﴾مَا جِئۡتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٖ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِتَارِكِيٓ ءَالِهَتِنَا عَن قَوۡلِكََ﴿ (You have not brought us any clear sign, and we are not going to abandon our gods for your word).

The Punishment of the Fierce Wind

When God's command came, they saw a cloud advancing towards their valleys. They thought it was rain to water their arid land, but it was a severe and devastating wind. This wind lasted nonstop for eight days and seven nights, destroying everything and leaving them fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees (cut-down palm trunks). Only Hud and those who believed with him were saved by mercy from God, and they lived for a period thereafter.

Key Quranic References:

  • Surah Hud: Verses 50-60 (Detail of the Call)
  • Surah Al-Ahqaf: Verses 21-25 (Mention of the brother of 'Ad)
  • Surah Al-Haqqah: Verses 6-8 (Description of the Destruction)

Lessons and Morals Learned:

  • Strength without Faith is Futile: Physical strength and wealth are useless if not used in obedience to God.
  • The False Warning: Punishment may come in the form of a blessing that people mistake for good (the cloud).

The Pivotal Verse:

﴾Falamma raawhu AAaridan mustaqbila awdiyatihim qaloo hatha AAaridun mumtiruna bal huwa ma istaAAjaltum bihi reehun feeha AAathabun aleem﴿ (Al-Ahqaf: 24)

Key to the Story: Arrogant Power

The story of Hud is an example of the consequence of arrogance and reliance on self-power instead of God's power. The fate of 'Ad was complete destruction to become a lesson for the arrogant.

﴾Walamma jaa amruna najjayna hoodan wallatheena amanoo maAAahu birahmatin minna wanajjaynahum min AAathabin ghaleeth﴿ (Hud: 58)
