Story Details: Confronting Polytheism

God sent Ilyas to his people who had deviated from the worship of God and worshipped an idol called Baal. Ilyas called them clearly and explicitly: ﴾أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلٗا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَٰلِقِينََ﴿ (Do you call upon Baal and forsake the Best of creators?), reminding them to abandon this idol and return to the worship of God, their Lord and the Lord of their first fathers.

Rejection and Salvation

The people did not respond to the call of Ilyas and rejected him, with only a few believing with him. The Qur'an mentions that his people rejected the message, thus incurring Divine punishment and destruction which took various forms. God saved Ilyas (PBUH) from their tyranny and plotting against him, so that God may complete the blessing upon them.
